The Value of Restoration

There comes a time in the life of a pipe organ when reliability and function begin to falter. It is at that point a decision needs to be made, often between whether to restore or replace. Although not every pipe organ is built in such a way that restoration is the obvious choice, for many instruments, it is a viable and economical path forward.
One can rightfully argue that the materials, such as old-growth forest lumber and labor from highly skilled specialized craftsmen that went into many historic organs, are no longer available today. Not to mention, from a sustainability perspective, when reasonable, restoration can reduce resource usage by a tremendous amount. Preserving those original materials is one way to continue to honor them.
Finally, we love restoring old instruments. It is a way of preserving history and giving new life to pipe organs. Our philosophy in our restoration work is to return an instrument to like-new condition, to replace all perishable materials and to make sure that the instrument is still meeting the needs of the client, whether that client is a congregation, a school, a concert hall or even a private residence.
